1991 Inductee - Tony Gutierrez

Tony Gutierrez dedicated his life for the United States of America, when his unit became engaged with a determined enemy force, and with complete disregard for his own personal safety he was awarded his third “Bronze Star” with a “V” device for his valor while serving in combat in South Vietnam. Gutierrez also received for his gallantry the “Vietnam Cross” which was awarded to him personally by the Vietnam Government; other decorations were the “Air Commendation Medal” for his heroism.

The United States Army stated when awarding Army Staff Sergeant Gutierrez the “Bronze Star”, “His actions were an inspiration to the other members of his unit and were instrumental in the successful completion of the mission.” It is further stated that, “his display of bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and for the United States Army.”

Gutierrez dedicated his life to the peace of the United States and to his community where he has served in 32 organizations. Some of Gutierrez’s community involvement include: Ripon Chamber of Commerce, South San Joaquin County Farm Bureau, Director of Manteca Handicap Center, San Joaquin County Affirmative Action Committee, Task Force Leader for Youth Education Motivation, San Joaquin County Task Force to Improve Self-esteem, Trustee for the United Way of San Joaquin County, and United Way Campaign Chairman for Manteca.

Gutierrez has also received many awards from various organizations which include the Manteca Chamber of Commerce, Builders Exchange, Manteca Lions Club, and from the Youth Education Motivation Program.

Gutierrez states his two most cherished awards are his selections as the Manteca “Man of the Year” from the Manteca Chamber of Commerce, and his award from the Pacific Gas and Electric Company for his outstanding community service.

Gutierrez while in Stockton attended Roosevelt Elementary School until he moved to French Camp in 1952. Gutierrez is a graduate of Manteca High School. He received his Associate of Arts Degree from San Joaquin Delta College. He credits his father and mother for giving him the inspiration to excel in his goals in life. They told him to be proud of who he was, and to always put one hundred percent into his efforts.

Gutierrez was the Manager of Manteca Pacific Gas and Electric Company where he enjoyed a highly successful career.
